Gentlemanly

When I visited Odawara High School in 1999 the students gave me a farewell gift of a board they all signed. You can read all about it on the page that explains why this page is called “do the justice.” The wonder and majesty of this simple cardboard extends beyond justice though. It extends to the world of porn.
We were sitting in music class and the Japanese kids were all tooting on their recorders (the worst instrument ever) when this major league “steamy” nerd kid came over to me. He leaned in close and whispered to me.
Nerd: “In America…….”
Me: “Yea?”
Nerd: “Do you have movies……..where people….have sex?”
Me: “Yes.”
Nerd: “What do you call this?”
Me: “Pornography?”
He leaned back for a moment, then swung his fist into a victorious uppercut, and held the pose, relishing his moment in the sun. One of the other boys ran over and took a huge baseball swing at his head with a rolled up recorder music book. I can only assume he wanted to know what porn was called so he could search for it on the internet or something.
On the train after I had shipped out I was reading all the things the kids wrote to me, and I noticed a strange note.

I AM GENTLEMEN GOOD-BY. Fantastic. He really was gentlemen.
