Smashing

As you may or may not know I have been playing a bit of Mother 3 recently (thats the sequel to Earthbound). As you also may know I am a fan of over complicated gif animation. Combine the two and what do you get? The dad character Flint in Super Smash Bros. Brawl!

Super Smash Bros Flint

Snazzy huh?

Flocking

Posted on June 20, 2006

I’m using Flock to post this, so I feel like I have to pimp them out a little. Its a nice Firefox offshoot browser with a focus on those oh so trendy “Web 2.0″ (I DESPISE this term) features like blogging, social bookmarking and photo sharing. It can’t do EVERYTHING in terms of interfacing with this blog system, but it does the job pretty nicely considering this is the first public beta. And now….VIDEOGAMES!

A while back The Gamers Quarter did a little piece on outside the box game ideas (in issue 3). Apparently joystiq has found the designer of Stubbs the Zombie up to the same thing, and even coming up with some fairly similar ideas:

  • Snow Day (game idea #9): An open-ended sandbox game from the perspective of a kid in a small town covered in a blanket of snow. You can make snow men, have snow fights, and (if you want to quest) help adults do various tasks for rewards. May we also recommend an online MMO portion alongside a crafted single-player adventure. And, if you decide to use more contemporary music (bad idea), consider Minus the Bear’s “Hooray” (good idea, and the lyrics are related to snow fights).
  • Loup-Garou (game idea #15): Mild-mannered adventure game by day, maniacally-warped romp by night, Loup-Garou puts you in the role of a farmer who at sunset transforms into a werewolf. In your wolf form, you have limited control over your actions, and the entire world takes a visual transformation (humans become monsters, sheep into tasty treats). It’s up to you to prepare for the transformation each night (i.e. making sure you do the least amount of damage / do not get killed by the angry community).

Patrick Curry’s craziest game ideas – Joystiq

People just love those totally open sandbox games these days don’t they?

The Glory of Sport

Posted on June 11, 2006

On Memorial Day 2006 a spectacle took place. A spectacle so great it took me several weeks to put it into words.

It was another chicken nugget eating contest.

Against the better judgment of the contestants Chaos on Castleford took place, a double-header of nugget eating insanity that threatened the stomachs of 6 men, as well as the stunned audience in attendance. All the pomp and pageantry one would expect from an event of this type was on full display, from costumes to a display involving dipping sauces that nearly evoked vomiting from the crowd, who weren’t even eating anything at the time.

The first event was a four-way affair for first timers, an un-timed race to 40 nuggets. Only the capacity of their stomachs and what regard for they had left for their bodies limited the combatants. Bubba rushed to a glorious victory, only to be left physically (and perhaps mentally) punished for several hours after the fact. Jason called it quits after only 20 nuggets, and Dee around the 35 nugget mark. Pete not only managed to finish his full 40, but also a celebratory sundae afterwards. What intestinal distress he may have experienced is better left unexplored.

Then, the old salts took the table. Brew and Kel once again faced off as they did during the Superbowl, attempting to devour 40 nuggets in five minutes. A blistering pace was set, only to be slightly disturbed when Kel dropped nearly half of his remaining nuggets on the floor. In the end both men reached the 31 nugget mark, but Kel managed to fully ingest the stragglers in his mouth first, taking a glorious victory and tying the series at 1-1. What will come next for these nugget combatants? Perhaps July 4th will inspire them to greater heights of gustatory athletics.

View the majesty here.

Once again a Microsoft beta product is full of good copy editing. This time it’s the adCenter Labs demo tools.

Good thing no one notices the title of a page!

Gentlemanly

Posted on June 1, 2006

When I visited Odawara High School in 1999 the students gave me a farewell gift of a board they all signed. You can read all about it on the page that explains why this page is called “do the justice.” The wonder and majesty of this simple cardboard extends beyond justice though. It extends to the world of porn.

We were sitting in music class and the Japanese kids were all tooting on their recorders (the worst instrument ever) when this major league “steamy” nerd kid came over to me. He leaned in close and whispered to me.

Nerd: “In America…….”
Me: “Yea?”
Nerd: “Do you have movies……..where people….have sex?”
Me: “Yes.”
Nerd: “What do you call this?”
Me: “Pornography?”
He leaned back for a moment, then swung his fist into a victorious uppercut, and held the pose, relishing his moment in the sun. One of the other boys ran over and took a huge baseball swing at his head with a rolled up recorder music book. I can only assume he wanted to know what porn was called so he could search for it on the internet or something.

On the train after I had shipped out I was reading all the things the kids wrote to me, and I noticed a strange note.

Gentleman

I AM GENTLEMEN GOOD-BY. Fantastic. He really was gentlemen.
