Heaven or Hell

I was over at Rits’ place last night, playing some Guilty Gear XX. One of his roommate’s friends (who I had never met) was watching us play and said “‘Ey, let me get winner.” And I figured why not, its always fun to watch people play such a ridiculous game for the first time. I was playing as Slayer and he was Sol.
Since he had never played before he asked me what button did what as the round was starting, so I held the controller up and was pointing out the buttons. I figured it was for the best to leave out stuff like Psych Bursting, Dust, Perfect Guard, Roman Cancel, False Roman Cancel and all the other nonsense the game tries to throw at you in the initial explanation, or we’d be there for like 20 minutes. I always find its easiest to describe games as if they were Street Fighter II, because most people have played that game. If you say “do a fireball with kick” most people know you mean do a quarter circle forward and press kick, it just saves time to explain it in terms that they are familiar with.
“So this one is punch, this one is kick and this one…” I look up at the screen and I notice he’s hitting me as I explain the buttons to him. This irritated me. I’m trying to explain the game to you, can’t you have the decency to actually listen and wait before you start getting your cheap shots in? So I had to teach him a lesson. About 15 seconds later the screen exploded in a yellow sunburst as I finish him off with both style AND flair. He threw the controller down on the couch and walked off muttering “Fuck this, I don’t even want to finish the match.” The moral of this story? If someone is decent enough to try to explain something to you, listen. Alternatively, I am good at Guilty Gear.
