Spelunker: A Study In Pain

Spelunker

In 1985 Broderbund unleashed a doosy of a Nintendo game on the world. Spelunker is a brutal fight for survival in the deepest bowels of the Earth where you shoot firecrackers at bats use your pocket machinegun to reduce the ghosts of failed travelers past to tiny pieces. This game hates you and it wants to eat your children.

So of course I had to play it.

Spelunker appears to be an average early Nintendo platforming game at first glance. However, after your first foray into these twisted caves of despair something becomes painfully obvious. Experts term this terminal velocity.

fall height

Our plucky hero can only fall about 2/3 of his own height before he dies. This wouldn’t be a problem if he wasn’t in a cave full of pitfalls, ropes, moving platforms and gently sloped hills. Keep in mind that it is possible to jump down a hill and fall to your death.

DANGER

You have to be on the lowest most point and jump so you dont hit the ceiling rock area. That part is hard though.
